| EGC Prayer Guide - September 2011 |
|
|
Dear Friend,

A few years ago, as director of this ministry, I felt that I was holding the reins to a team of powerful horses, but each horse was moving in a different direction. I began to pray that the Lord would give us a unifying vision and a common direction for all we do. God is answering that prayer. I believe that God has given us, through Living System Ministry, an open door for more effective ministry, and a new vision for how we can do more good for the Kingdom of God than we have been able to do before.
I would appreciate your prayers for the staff of EGC as we work together this fall to more carefully and more thoroughly align all our program activities and goals with Living System Ministry. I have asked all our ministry directors to visually articulate the systems they are working in, and begin to discover the most effective entry points and leverage points in those systems. Then, working with many partners, we will find out how a little bit of energy applied to the right area can create a huge response for positive change in our churches and communities.
As we learn how to articulate Living System Ministry through all of our programs, and as we develop the tools to make this approach practical, we will be better able to train others.
Please look over the list below, and choose a few of these needs as well to lift up in prayer this month. Thank you for your prayers for the staff and ministries of EGC.
Sincerely,

Jeff Bass
Executive Director

Pray for our ministries
INTERCULTURAL MINISTRIES

Dr. Bianca Duemling, assistant director of EGC's Intercultural Ministries, asks for prayer for guidance as she and Rev. Dr. Gregg Detwiler, director, work to define priorities and next steps for Intercultural Ministries. Bianca also mentions that she is one of three new team members leading CUME's new Inner City Ministry class, starting this month. "Please pray that we grow together as a team and for the students, that this semester will be a life changing time for them." (CUME is Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's Boston campus, the Center for Urban Ministerial Education.)
GREATER BOSTON CHURCH PLANTING COLLABORATIVE
Rev. Ralph Kee, animator, Greater Boston Church Planting Collaborative reminds us that EGC continues to reach out to church planters with opportunities for training and peer networking. Pray for the church planters who will be gathering this month on Saturday, September 17, 2011, for a discussion and presentation entitled: "Boston needs women church planters as well as men church planters." This gathering will be facilitated by Rev. Dr. Marilyn E. Weekes, Senior Pastor of Spirit of Power Living Word Ministries International in Cambridge, and Student Accounts & Office Coordinator at CUME. All are welcome.
STARLIGHT MINISTRIES

Please pray for the Starlight staff as they plan and recruit participants for the 3rd annual Starlight Walkathon, which will be October 22. Pray for the logistics that still need to be finalized. And pray that many people will participate, and that Starlight will reach its fundraising goal of $35,000.

Pray for our partners
Michele Mitsumori, director of administration, points out that two new Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary courses are starting up this fall in Hartford, CT, and Springfield, MA, through an EGC fiscal conduit partner, Visions for Springfield, led by Donna Calawa and Rev. Dr. Annette Wright. Offering these courses is one way Visions for Springfield seeks to nurture the vitality of churches in the Springfield-Hartford area by bringing more contextualized theological education to urban leaders there.
Sheba Telore, EGC's receptionist and a micro-enterprise trainer in India, asks to pray for an Indian colleague in ministry wanting to visit EGC who repeatedly has been denied a visa. Pray for the Boston-based Kolhapur Church Council Support Committee that works to support church planting and ministerial training in Kolhapur, India. Sheba and her husband, Rev. Ramesh Telore, ask for prayer as they consider whether or not the Lord would have them return to India to work with the Kolhapur Church Council.
Rev. Dr. Gregg Detwiler, director of Intercultural Ministries, asks us to please pray for upcoming series of activities around reaching out to Muslims in our communities, and for God's wisdom and love to permeate these activities. Gregg also asks for "wisdom, clarity, and the needed resources" for his work this fall, and that the Lord would send capable interns and volunteers to help with some ongoing ministry projects.
Brian Corcoran, project director with Applied Research and the Vitality Project, asks us to lift up several different needs. First, pray for the Hall Hotel Christian community as there are transitions in the household with two residents leaving and two new women moving in. Secondly, he points out that "Gordon in Boston" students will be joining the CUME Inner City Ministry class this semester, and asks that we pray for him as he will be facilitating their cohort within the class. And finally, Brian is part of an EGC team participating in an urban ministry conference in New York City this month. Pray for those EGC staff who will be presenting ideas around Living System Ministry to leaders from other North American cities, that their presentations will be anointed by the Spirit and that understanding and good conversations will result.

Pray for our staff
Steve Daman, Living System Ministry consultant with EGC Consulting, writes, "Thanks for your prayers for period of rest and renewal during my recent sabbatical. I am excited, after this, about the possibilities and challenges ahead as I reengage with EGC in a new capacity. Pray for my need for additional missionary support, that the Lord would show us his plan for meeting this need and the best ways to use his resources. Pray for wisdom for me as I come alongside EGC staff to help them better align their programs and practices with Living System Ministry principles." (photo: Steve hiking in UK, May 2011)
Hanno van der Bijl, research associate, Vitality Project & Applied Research, writes that he appreciates your prayers for him and his wife, Lauren, as they transition into parenthood. Pray for baby Jeremiah, who was born prematurely a few weeks ago, and, though still in the hospital, is progressing well. Hanno also writes, "We praise God for those who support my work at EGC with prayer and financial support. We also praise God that I now have two part-time jobs teaching ESL. Please pray for my work at EGC as I finish research and writing on the Ministry Training Directory and as I begin work on the Boston Church Directory and the Boston Collegiate Ministry Project. Thank you!"
Dr. Doug Hall, president, and Judy Hall, assistant to the president, ask for prayer for Doug's health as well as for energy for completing projects as he has been experiencing extended periods of weakness accompanying an intestinal tract problem. Judy asks us to remember several other staff members who have expressed various needs to her, including Julie Fahnestock, resource network coordinator for Starlight Ministries, whose husband, Thomas, is having serious stomach and digestion problems; Pastor Clarence McGregor, outreach pastor with Starlight Ministries, who is experiencing several physical problems and sensing a need to rest; and Sandy Jackson, office volunteer, who has ongoing challenges with seizures and weakness.
Rema Cheng, Living System Ministry associate, says "I would really appreciate prayer for grad school; I just started this week and am already stressed!"
Felix Chiu, research intern, asks that we pray for him, that he would be more open and loving toward others, and have the ability and willingness to communicate well and to trust those the Lord has put in his path. He also says that while he is tempted to be fearful about the economy, he prays that the Body of Christ would be a good witness during these trying times, especially as we demonstrate the stewardship of resources, as our Lord Jesus Christ directs us.
Jin Min Lee, consultant and project manager with EGC Consulting, writes, "Please pray that this busy season is one filled not with a works-minded stress but a God-filled trust and peace. It's important for me to manage my time well, but I am deeply convicted that it is also a call to love others all the more. In the past, my brusqueness is proportional to my stress and I don't want that to negatively affect how I treat others."
