Urban Ministry Training

Overview
Urban Ministry Training provides teaching, training, and internship opportunities to seminary and college students, churches, and lay leaders on a variety of urban ministry topics.

The Emmanuel Gospel Center offers training programs and seminars throughout the year. These range from "urban tours" in which EGC staff take a group around the city to see first-hand the churches and communities that are experiencing growth and renewal, to one- or two-day workshops in topics such as grant-writing, relational ministry, systems thinking, youth ministry, and other issues relating to urban ministry. Starlight Ministries offers training in ministry with people who are homeless.

We also work closely with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's Center for Urban Ministerial Education (CUME) to teach urban ministry training. Several of our staff teach courses in the both the Master's of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry programs.

College and post-graduate students interested in hands-on experience in urban ministry are welcome to apply for EGC's internship program. Often students come to EGC during their summer breaks or during a short term. Typical internships last from 4 to 8 weeks, although some interns have stayed a year or more. At times we are able to provide room and board for a modest fee.

It is possible to design an internship related to a college major or to a specific ministry at EGC. In a number of cases, internships have been used for credit. Interns have opportunities to work with experienced urban ministry staff, do research and writing, help with Starlight Ministries to the homeless, visit urban churches, interview leaders, fellowship with a multicultural staff, and more.

In the past, EGC has welcomed interns from England and Germany, and from many U.S. colleges, including Amherst, Gordon, Harvard, Messiah, Middlebury, the University of North Carolina, Wake Forest, Wellesley, Wheaton, and Williams.
