We function as a learning community
Urban Ministry Training is not just one program at EGC, but permeates all we do. For example, Starlight Ministries offers training events as well as mentoring for church groups and individuals wanting to engage in ministry with people who are homeless. Every month, the Center publishes new things we are learning about urban ministry through the Emmanuel Research Review. There is a strong training component to neXus Boston, the Greater Boston Church Planting Collaborative, Haitian Ministries, and virtually all of our programs.
Urban ministry internships
Each year, ministry interns serve alongside staff, gaining hands-on learning experience in ministry while helping us meet our program goals. We generally tailor opportunities to the needs and interests of the prospective intern and the current needs of EGC. Opportunities range from a few weeks to a year or more, and can be part time or full time. Some of our interns are undergraduate or graduate students who receive credit for the work they do here. Contact us for more information.
School of thought
Living System Ministry is an approach to Christian ministry that recognizes the differences between cats (the world God created) and toasters (the world we create using our technology and our capacities, limited as they are). The church is the Body of Christ, a living system. Neighborhoods, cities, and cultures, too, are complex and interrelated living social systems. As Westerners, we can learn a better way to do ministry in our very organizationally and technologically centered culture. This is the school of thought behind EGC’s philosophy of ministry, recently documented in a book by EGC President, Dr. Doug Hall. We are developing new venues for teaching the concepts of Living System Ministry. Learn more about Living System Ministry.
